BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System. It is a firmware program that is built into a computer's motherboard. BIOS provides the necessary instructions for the computer to start up and initialize its hardware components. It performs tasks such as identifying and testing hardware devices, loading the operating system into the computer's memory, and enabling communication between the hardware and software.

The BIOS is responsible for the initial startup process, commonly known as the "boot sequence." It performs a power-on self-test (POST) to check if all hardware components are functioning properly. After that, it locates the operating system on the computer's storage devices and hands over control to it.

In recent years, BIOS has been gradually replaced by UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) in newer computers. UEFI offers more advanced features and a graphical user interface, but the basic concept remains the same: providing low-level software that facilitates the communication between the computer's hardware and software.
